Description

Uses

Lamictal DC (Lamotrigine) is used as an adjunctive therapy for partial seizures, primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures and seizures in patients affected by Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. In addition to this, physician may prescribe it for other types of seizures in patients with epilepsy, and it may also be used for conversion to monotherapy in patients undergoing treatment with certain other drugs.

This medicine belongs to a class of drugs known as anticonvulsants (antiepileptic drugs). When taken, it helps to reduce abnormal brain electrical activity, which may help to treat seizures. Patients affected by bipolar disorder may sometimes be prescribed this drug to delay episodes of mania or depression.

Dosage and Administration

Consult your physician prior to starting treatment with Lamictal Dc (Lamotrigine), and strictly follow all instructions given to you. Adults who are taking valproate are sometimes directed to take 25mg every other day for weeks 1 and 2 of treatment. During weeks 3 and 4, there is a possibility that the physician will tell the patient to take 25mg every day. For week 5 and onwards, the prescribing physician may decide to increase the dosage by 25mg to 50mg per day every 1 to 2 weeks. Generally speaking, the maintenance dose prescribed to patients only taking valproate is 100mg to 200mg per day (in divided doses), whereas the dosage prescribed to patients taking valproate and other medicines which induce glucuronidation may range from 100mg to 400mg per day (also in divided doses).

Patients who are not being treated with carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital, primidone or valproate may be instructed by their physician to take 25mg every day for weeks 1 and 2 of treatment. During weeks 3 and 4, the dosage may be increased to 50mg per day if deemed necessary by the prescribing physician. For the fifth week of treatment (and onwards to maintenance therapy), the patient may have their dosage increased by 50mg per day, every 1 to 2 weeks. The usual maintenance dose for patients in this category is 225mg to 375mg per day.

Usually, patients who are taking carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital or primidone and who are not being treated with valorpate are told to start out with a dose of 50mg per day for the first two weeks. After this, they may be directed to take 100mg per day in 2 divided doses (for weeks 3 and 4). For week 5 and onwards, the prescribing physician may then increase the dosage by 100mg per day (every 1 or 2 weeks), and the maintenance dosage may range from 300mg to 500mg per day in divided doses. However, it is essential to note that the dosage regimens provided here are for reference only, and patients must only take the amount prescribed by their physician.
