Abilify

Abilify (Aripiprazole) belongs to a class of medications known as atypical antipsychotics, and it works differently than other antipsychotic drugs. When taken, this medicine acts on the dopamine and serotonin receptors in the brain, and it helps to stabilize the action of dopamine. This is believed to help treat schizophrenia symptoms. Other conditions for which this medicine may be prescribed include treating patients with bipolar disorder for episodes of mania (and mixed episodes), and helping to reduce aggression in certain patients with autism.

The exact dosage required for patients undergoing treatment with Abilify (Aripiprazole) depends on the condition being treated (as well as other factors), and a physician will decide the correct dosage. Adults treating schizophrenia may be started out on an initial dosage of 10mg or 15mg, taken once per day. The dosage may be adjusted at the discretion of a physician, and a maintenance dose ranging from 10mg to 30mg may be prescribed. The dosage for adult patients affected by bipolar disorder is usually 15mg to begin with, which may then be increased to 30mg if a physician decides to do so.

Side effects of Abilify (Aripiprazole) include:

• Anxiety
• Insomnia
• Dizziness
• Drowsiness
• An increase in weight

Tell your physician about any side effects which occur. Serious side effects are possible when taking this medicine, however, this is considered to be less common. Immediate medical care is required if you notice stiff muscles, fever, uncontrolled body movements, pain in the chest, visual disturbances or any other symptoms of a severe reaction.

Taking this medicine may make it more difficult for the body to cool down after it becomes hot. Inform your physician if you will be exposed to hot temperatures or exercising.

There is an increased risk of blood clots associated with taking this drug. Discuss this with your physician prior to the commencement of treatment.
