Description

Uses

Arcoxia (Etoricoxib) is a COX-2 inhibitor which works by decreasing joint (or muscular) inflammation and pain caused by rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. It can also be used for symptoms of gout and to provide short term relief for pain occurring due to dental procedures. This medicine is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that works by blocking cyclo-oxygenase, thereby leading to a reduced production of prostaglandins (lipid compounds believed to act as mediators of inflammation), which in turn helps to treat symptoms such as pain and inflammation. The main difference when compared to other NSAIDs is the reduced activity against COX-1, which may help reduce the gastrointestinal side effects commonly associated with other related medicines.

Dosage and Administration

Arcoxia (Etoricoxib) comes in 90mg tablets. Adults being treated for rheumatoid arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis may be instructed by the physician providing medical treatment to administer 90mg (one tablet) per day. The dosage for pain caused by dental surgery is also 90mg per day, however patients will be directed to limit treatment to 3 days. Other conditions will require a lower dosage, and patients who are affected by certain medical conditions (such as liver disease) will also be told by their physician to take a lower dosage. In all cases, follow the instructions given by your physician.

Side effects

After administering Arcoxia (Etoricoxib) patients should note that some side effects could occur. Talk to your physician if any reactions are noticed. Examples might include:

  • Nausea
  • Dyspepsia
  • Dizzy sensation
  • A tired and weak feeling
  • Pain that affects the stomach

It is also important to note that other side effects might be experienced. Consult your physician straight away if you suffer from hallucinations, feelings of confusion, increased blood pressure or any other side effects which have not been listed here.

Precautions

Arcoxia (Etoricoxib) could trigger severe side effects, including ulceration and bleeding of the stomach or intestinal lining. Certain factors could increase the risk of this, and patients are advised to see their physician immediately if they notice bloody stools, vomiting blood or any other signs of stomach bleeding.

This medicine might cause an increased risk of strokes or heart attacks. Therefore, your physician will need to consider this before treatment can commence, and patients considered to be at risk may be told not to take it.
