Uses

Intazide (Balsalazide) is an anti-inflammatory prescribed to patients to treat an ulcerative colon.

Dosage and Administration

How much you take and how often will depend on the strength of the Intazide (Balsalazide) and your condition. Take strictly as directed by your physician, with or without food. Do not alter your dose or suddenly stop taking Intazide (Balsalazide) without consulting your physician, even if you are feeling better.

If you do, your symptoms may get worse and increase the onset of unwanted side effects. If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the one you missed.

Side effects

As with all medications, Intazide (Balsalazide) has the potential to cause side effects in some patients. Common side effects include diarrhea, vomiting, headaches, muscle or joint pain, nausea, a loss of appetite, heartburn, and stomach pain. If these symptoms worsen or they are persistent, contact your physician promptly.

Rare side effects include an allergic reaction with symptoms such as hives, swelling of your tongue, mouth, lips, or face, tightness in your chest, itching, rashes, and difficulty breathing, jaundice, fatigue, rectal bleeding, symptoms of an infection, dark urine, and fever. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek immediate emergency medical treatment.

Precautions

Tobacco, grapefruit juice, and alcohol may interact with Intazide (Balsalazide), so discuss with your physician your use of these substances while taking this medication.

Tell your physician if you have kidney problems, any stomach problems, or an intestinal blockage.
