KIWOF

KIWOF (Praziquantel/Pyrantel Pamoate/Febantel) is used as a canine dewormer. It works against hookworm, roundworm (ascarids), tapeworm and other parasites. This medicine comes as tablets, which are available in two different strengths, and a suspension. One of the ingredients in this medicine (praziquantel) exhibits anti-helminthic action against cestodes (tapeworm). Its mechanism of action involves acting on proteins and phospholipids in the parasitic worm so as to affect its integument membranes. This allows the digestive system to metabolize the worm, and it also leaves it vulnerable to attacks by the immune system of the host animal.

Pyrantel Pamoate targets roundworm and hookworm, and it functions as a neuromuscular blocking agent. It works by triggering contractions and paralysis of the worms. This means that they are not able to remain attached to the intestines, and they are eventually removed in the feces by means of peristalsis. Febantel is contained in the tablets but not the suspension. It targets whipworms and other parasites. By affecting the ability of the worms to metabolize carbohydrates, it affects their intake of vital nutrients.

KIWOF (Praziquantel/Pyrantel Pamoate/Febantel) chewable tablets are available as 2 different strength formulations. The Kiwof plus formulation is best suited for treating dogs which are small, medium and large. Each tablet contains 50mg of Praziquantel, 144mg of Pyrantel Pamoate and 150mg of Febantel. The Kiwof plus version contains a higher quantity of the active ingredients and is generally used for large dogs. Veterinarians usually recommend using the suspension (which does not contain febantel) for treating puppies and dogs up to 1 year old.

In all cases, careful consideration will be taken by the vet when deciding upon the correct dosage. The required dose will be calculated based on the dog`s weight. Both the tablets and suspension are suitable for direct oral administration to the dog. However, should the owner wish, it is also possible to give it directly to the dog. In some cases, veterinarians recommend that dogs be treated every 3 months if routine treatment and management is required. However, this may vary and owners must comply with the directions provided by the veterinarian.
