Description

Uses

Malirid (Primaquine) is used to treat malaria after treatment with chloroquine. It is used to treat liver infections caused by the ovale and vivax types of malaria. This medicine is not used to prevent malaria. It is an antimalarial drug which interferes with the parasites that cause malaria.

Dosage and Administration

Take Malirid (Primaquine) strictly as directed by your physician, with or without food, at the same time each day. This drug works best when there is a constant supply in your system. Do not alter your dose or suddenly stop taking it without consulting your physician, even if you are feeling better. If you do, your symptoms may worsen, parasitic activity may increase, and it can cause the onset of unwanted side effects. If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the one you missed.

Side effects

As with all medication, Malirid (Primaquine) has the potential to cause side effects in some patients. Side effects include vomiting, abdominal pain, a low red blood cell count, nausea, and hemoglobin disorders that cause your red blood cells to be unable to carry oxygen. If you experience any of these side effects, contact your physician or seek emergency medical treatment.

Precautions

Tobacco, certain foods, and alcohol may interact with Malirid (Primaquine), so discuss with your physician your use of these substances while taking this medication.

Tell your physician if you have a history of rheumatoid arthritis, lupus of any type, and a G6PD deficiency.
