Description

Uses

Metformin (Metformin Hydrochloride) is a medicine that is indicated for use in patients affected by type 2 diabetes (however, it is not to be used for the treatment of type 1 diabetes). This medicine is taken to help diabetic patients control their blood sugar levels, which is important, as this can help prevent damage to the kidneys and other health conditions, while also lowering the risk of a heart attack. In some cases, this medicine may be prescribed alongside changes in diet and other precautions to patients considered to be at risk of diabetes, and it may also be used to treat a condition called polycystic ovarian syndrome.

Dosage and Administration

Besides treatment with Metformin (Metformin Hydrochloride) tablets, diabetic patients will also be told to follow an exercise and weight management program, and may be given special dietary instructions which must be followed. In addition to this, regular blood sugar tests will be required. In some cases, adult patients are directed to take 500mg, twice per day. The tablets should be taken with meals, in the morning and evening. It is essential that all instructions provided by your physician are followed.

Side effects

Patients taking Metformin (Metformin Hydrochloride) should note that side effects are possible, and a list of some possible reactions is provided here:

  • Headache
  • Bloating
  • Flushing
  • Changes in the nails
  • A metallic taste in the mouth

Serious reactions have been reported in rare cases. Seek medical attention immediately if you notice fever, aches affecting the body, a sudden increase in weight or any other signs of a serious reaction.

Precautions

You may be told by your physician to avoid drinking alcoholic beverages while undergoing treatment with this drug, as alcohol may increase the risk of hypoglycemia and lactic acidosis.

Lactic acidosis may also be more likely to occur in patients with a reduced kidney function. This is a serious condition, and patients are advised to discuss the risk of this with their physician before starting treatment.

If you have an allergic or hypersensitive reaction, seek emergency medical attention. Possible symptoms include difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, swelling, chest tightness, skin rashes, and hives.

Metformin (Metformin Hydrochloride) should only be used as instructed and prescribed by your physician or pharmacist. Do not alter your dosage unless specifically instructed to do so by either of the above. Dosage and usage often depends on the severity of the condition, as well as the patient`s medical history and current health condition.

Before you begin using this medication, ensure your physician is aware of the following:

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you have any allergies.
  • If you have any other illnesses, disorders, or medical conditions.
  • If you are using any other drugs or medication.
  • If you are using any vitamins or supplements.
