Uses

Previcox is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) for dogs containing the active ingredient Firocoxib. Firocoxib can relieve pain and inflammation caused by with osteoarthritis or other joint complaints.

Dosage and Administration

Previcox comes packaged in a box of 30 tablets. Two different dosages are available - 57gm tablets and 227 mg tablets.

Most dogs take a dose of 5.0mg/kg daily (2.27mg/lb daily). Your vet will tell you what dosage your dog will require based on the dog`s weight and other factors.

Previcox is a chewable oral tablet that can be given directly to your dog. If this is difficult, you can hide that tablet in your dog`s food.

Side effects

Treatment with any NSAID can result in unwanted side effects. Firocoxib (Previcox) has a side effect profile similar to most NSAIDs, the most common if which are digetive system problems.

Other side effects you may notice in your dog while treating with Previcox include:

  • Change in bowel movements (diarrhea, or black, tarry or bloody stools)
  • Change in behavior (decreased or increased activity level, poor coordination, seizure, or aggression)
  • Jaundice (yellowing of gums, skin or whites of eyes)
  • Increase water consumption or urination changes (frequency, color, or smell)
  • Skin irritation (redness, scabs, or scratching)
  • Unexpected weight loss

If your dog experiences any of the above die effects, tell your vet.

Precautions

Before treating your dog with Pevicox, tell your vet if your dog:

  • has an allergy to aspirin or any other NSAID
  • has an ulcer or bleeding in the stomach
  • has liver, or kidney disease
  • has congestive heart failure
  • has fluid retention
  • has bleeding disorders
  • has heart disease or high blood pressure
  • is pregnant or lactating
  • taking a steroid medication such as prednisone, methylprednisolone or prednisolone

The conditions listed above can interact negatively with Previcox, or can cause problems in the dog.
