Description

Uses

Ranitidine Relief (Ranitidine Hydrochloride) is used as an ulcer treatment. Its mode of action is decreasing stomach acid secretion. The active ingredient in this medication is classified as a histamine H2-receptor antagonist. By competitively and reversibly inhibiting the H2 receptors in the stomach, it stops histamine from binding to these receptors. This in turn prevents stomach acid from being produced in the stomach.

Usually, the stomach and duodenum linings are guarded by a layer which helps resist the acid. Should this layer become damaged, it is possible that a peptic ulcer may develop. Excess stomach acid may also trigger an ulcer. However, as this medicine helps bring about an overall reduction in stomach acid, it can promote healing. Physicians also prescribe it alongside antibiotics to help eradicate a type of bacteria (helicobacter pylori) that may be associated with duodenal ulcers.

Other indications include gastro-esophageal reflux disease, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, chronic episodic dyspepsia (indigestion), prevention of ulcers in patients undergoing treatment with NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), helping to protect against recurrent ulcers and other conditions.

Dosage and Administration

Ranitidine Relief (Ranitidine Hydrochloride) is provided as 150mg or 300mg strength tablets which are taken orally, exactly as directed by the physician in charge of treatment. The dosage schedule can vary, depending on what condition is being treated. Adults treating esophagitis may be told to take 150mg twice per day (morning and night), or else a single 300mg dose at night. Treatment lasts for as long as the physician deems necessary (possibly 3 months).

Adult patients who are undergoing acute treatment of a duodenal ulcer or gastric ulceration may sometimes be directed to undergo treatment for 4 weeks, but some cases may require a further 2 to 4 weeks of medical treatment. The dosage is either 300mg administered at bedtime, or else 150mg taken in the morning and another 150mg taken at night. Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and any other conditions will require a dosage regimen that will differ to those listed above. Always comply with the dosage instructions provided by your physician.
