Description

Uses

Sulpitac (Amisulpride) is classified as a neuroleptic and it works for schizophrenia (either chronic or acute) by affecting the dopamine receptors. When administered, it acts as an antagonist of the D2 and D3 dopamine receptors, which in turn helps to contribute to the relief of schizophrenia symptoms, such as a feeling of withdrawal, abnormal suspicions and paranoia, aggressive behavior, hallucinating and a depressed mood. Medical experts have also studied its efficacy in the treatment of major depression, acute mania caused by bipolar disorder and dysthymia.

Dosage and Administration

Sulpitac (Amisulpride) uncoated tablets each contain 50mg of the active ingredient and are intended for administration by mouth. The required dosage may differ significantly from patient to patient depending on a wide range of factors. Normally, the dosage that physicians direct patients to take ranges from 50mg to 800mg per day, and in some cases, it may even be adjusted to 1200mg a day. Daily dosages of 400mg or below are normally given as a single dose whereas patients taking in excess of 400mg per day may be told to separate it into two doses (once in the morning and again in the evening).

Certain factors, such as kidney function problems may result in your physician ordering a reduced dosage. Strict compliance with the dosage instructions given by the physician is required of all patients for the entire duration of treatment. Under no circumstances should any adjustments be made to the dosage schedule unless you are following the orders of a physician. Patients also need to take note of the fact that sudden termination of treatment could lead to withdrawal symptoms (sweating, insomnia and muscle stiffness). It is possible that your physician will recommend gradual reduction of the dosage in order to stop this from happening.

Side effects

Sulpitac (Amisulpride) could cause patients to exhibit side effects, such as:

  • Shaking
  • Salivating
  • Feeling restless
  • Muscular stiffness
  • Slower than normal movement

It is essential that your physician is made aware of all side effects that occur during the course of treatment. Attend the emergency room or consult your physician straight away if you notice symptoms of neuroleptic malignant syndrome, seizures, weight gain or any other serious side effects that have not been listed here.

Precautions

Sulpitac (Amisulpride) could cause a worsening of Parkinson`s disease in patients affected by this condition.

Hyperglycemia has been known to occur in some patients treated with antipsychotic medicines such as this one, and some patients (especially those with diabetes) may need to have their sugar levels monitored.
