Tiova

Tiova (Tiotropium Bromide) is classified as a long acting bronchodilator with anticholinergic effects. It helps manage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (bronchitis or emphysema) by acting on the muscarinic receptors (M3) of the airways which are located at the smooth muscle, thereby causing the airways to open up. When administered, its effects can last for up to 24 hours, which helps to effectively ensure that breathing is made easier over a long period of time. Patients should note that this medicine is only indicated for use on a long term basis, for the maintenance and management of COPD symptoms, and to decrease the occurrence of exacerbations. It is not to be used for rapid relief from an acute flare up.

Tiova (Tiotropium Bromide) is available as 18mcg capsules (rotacaps) which are not to be taken orally, but rather inhaled using a rotahaler or revolizer device (available separately). The 9mcg variety comes supplied with an inhaler, which is equipped to administer 200 doses of medicine. It should be placed in the mouth and the button pressed so as to release the medicine, which is then inhaled. Your physician will recommend the correct dosage, and it will be necessary to administer it as directed. Adult patients are sometimes told to administer it once per day, however this could vary due to individual factors. Ensure that you fully comply with all instructions given by the physician.

Use of Tiova (Tiotropium Bromide) may cause side effects, and you will need to report all reactions to your physician. Possible reactions include:

• Nosebleeds
• Taste disturbances
• Digestive disruption
• Symptoms resembling a cold
• Dry feeling inside the mouth

You will require medical help straight away if you suffer from soreness in the eyes, blurred vision, problems related to urination, sores occurring in the mouth or lips, symptoms of an infection or any other serious side effects that have not been referenced here.

Do not swallow Tiova (Tiotropium Bromide) rotacaps. They should only be administered via inhalation in combination with a revolizer or rotahaler (special devices used to inhale the contents of the capsules) which are sold separately.

If a sudden worsening of symptoms and increased wheezing (paradoxical bronchospasms) occurs straight after use, get emergency medical help.
