Xenazine

Xenazine (Tetrabenazine) is used to treat the symptoms of Huntington`s disease, including uncontrolled bodily movements. This medication may also be used to treat other hyperkinetic disorders. It works by decreasing the amount of monoamines in the brain. Monoamines are involved with nerve and muscle functions, and it is the over activity of these chemicals which can cause uncontrolled movements, also known as chorea, which are associated with Huntington`s disease.

Xenazine (Tetrabenazine) should be taken orally, and may be taken either with or without food. It is common for doctors to start the patient out on a low dose and gradually increase the dosage over time, depending on the patient`s response to treatment. Patients should never exceed their prescribed dosage.

Some of side effects which have been reported by patients taking Xenazine (Tetrabenazine) include fatigue, insomnia, nausea, and dizziness. Consult your doctor immediately if you notice any of the following uncommon, but serious side effects:

• Decreased urination
• Rapid weight gain
• Loss of balance
• Tremors
• Muscle stiffness
• Uncontrolled movements of the face or tongue
• Depression or suicidal thoughts
