Description

Uses

Acivir Cream (Acyclovir) is a topical antiviral which can inhibit the herpes simplex and varicella zoster viruses. It is indicated for the treatment and control of genital herpes, herpes zoster and cold sores (herpes labialis). The active ingredient of this cream is classified as a nucleoside analog, and its mechanism of action is inhibiting the viral DNA polymerase. It also helps to stop the growth of the viral DNA chain. Because the replication of viral DNA is terminated, so too is the spread of the virus. This gives the body the opportunity to fight and control the infection. However, patients should note that it will not cure the infection.

Dosage and Administration

Acivir Cream (Acyclovir) is used topically, in strict compliance with the instructions of your physician. The application of large quantities must be avoided, and it should also not be used for any longer than the period of time suggested by your physician. Treatment generally commences as soon as symptoms are noticed. Adults treating herpes simplex may be instructed by their physician to apply it at 3 hour intervals, as much as 6 times per day. Patients may be directed to continue treatment for a 7 day period. Ensure that you wash your hands well both before and after application of the cream.
