Acivir

Acivir (Acyclovir) is an antiviral drug for herpes. It works by inhibiting the DNA polymerase of the virus, which in turn prevents it from spreading. This medication is classified as a nucleoside analogue, and although it is not a cure for the virus, it can stop the herpes simplex virus from replicating its DNA, thereby allowing the body`s immune system to deal with the infection. It can treat the sores caused by chicken pox, shingles, genital herpes and other conditions.

Acivir (Acyclovir) is available in a number of different strength tablets, which include 200mg, 400mg and 800mg strength varieties. The dosage will be calculated by your physician based on the condition that you are treating. Adults treating herpes zoster may be told by their physician to administer 800mg by mouth 5 times per day (at 4 hour intervals), with treatment lasting for 7 to 10 days. Treating a herpes simplex episode will require a different dosage, which may be based on whether it is an initially occurring or recurrent episode. Strict compliance with the instructions of your physician is needed at all times.

Use of the nucleoside analogue Acivir (Acyclovir) can sometimes result in patients suffering from side effects. You must inform your physician if this happens. Some examples are provided here:

• Vertigo
• Headache
• Loose stools
• Sleepy feeling
• Vomiting and poor appetite

The occurrence of less severe side effects is considered to be more common. However, severe reactions are also possible. Patients will be required to seek medical attention immediately if they suffer from bruises, abnormal bleeding, urination problems or any other serious side effects that have not been listed here.

Acivir (Acyclovir) does not prevent you from transmitting herpes to those around you. Ensure that you take all the necessary precautions to prevent this.

Patients are normally told by their physician to begin treatment as soon as symptoms are noticed.
