Description

Uses

Alerid (Cetirizine Hydrochloride) is an oral antihistamine which provides temporary relief from hay fever and allergy symptoms by affecting histamine receptors. This condition can cause a nasal congestion (blocked nose), runny nose, swelling or watering of the eyes, itchiness, sneezing and a sore throat.

Usually, allergens such as pollen or dust can trigger the onset of symptoms. The body reacts to this and releases histamine from the mast cells. However, this medicine`s mechanism of action involves temporarily blocking the H1 receptor that histamine normally acts on. The result of this is that any histamine released is unable to produce an allergic reaction.

This serves to relieve sneezing, itching and other hay fever symptoms. One medical study was conducted to determine whether or not it was beneficial in treating insect bites. It has also been studied for its effects in treating an allergic cough. In addition to this, some patients have taken it for eczema (atopic dermatitis) and urticaria.

Dosage and Administration

The strength of each Alerid (Cetirizine Hydrochloride) tablet is 10mg. Dosage instructions which are unique to each patient will be provided by the physician in charge of treatment. Some adults may be instructed to take a single 10mg tablet once per day. Physicians generally tell patients not to exceed 10mg in any 24 hour period. Individual factors may require that the physician prescribes a lower dosage. These can include kidney problems, liver disease, hemodialysis and other medical disorders.
