Description

Uses

Allersoothe (Promethazine Hydrochloride) alleviates congestion in the nose caused by allergic rhinitis (perennial or seasonal) or the common cold. Its mechanism of action involves working as an antihistaminic agent. After administration, this medicine starts to work quickly and patients may notice its therapeutic effects 20 minutes after taking it. The duration of effectiveness is usually 4 to 6 hours, however it may remain active for as long as 12 hours in some cases. Said to be derived from phenothiazine, this first generation antihistamine has been used since 1951.

It acts on the histamine H1 receptor and blocks it. Because of this, any histamine that is secreted by the body in response to an allergy is unable to bind to its receptors throughout the body. This in turn prevents the histamine from producing vasodilative effects (such as swelling of the airways in the nose, itching and other allergic responses). In addition to treating hay fever, it can also work for hives, eczema and other uncomplicated skin conditions, and physicians have also treated patients for bug bites and bee stings with it.

Oral administration can also cause drowsiness, as the active ingredient is known to act on the brain. Because of this, it has found use as a sedative agent, and patients have often been given it (under the close supervision of a physician) for preoperation sedation. By acting on the brain, and in particular the vomiting center, it can produce an antiemetic effect, and for this reason, it is often used to prevent nausea and vomiting caused by motion sickness, surgery or medication.

Dosage and Administration

Allersoothe (Promethazine Hydrochloride) film coated tablets are available in either 10mg or 25mg strength. Your physician will tell you which variety is most suited to your individual needs after conducting a medical assessment. The adult dosage for allergies (rhinorrhea, sneezing and hay fever) often differs based on the symptoms and the individual response to the medicine. Physicians sometimes direct adults to take 25mg to 75mg once per day (at night time) or as an alternative, they may be directed to administer 10mg to 20mg, 2 to 3 times each day.

Adults treating travel sickness will be generally told to take a dosage of 25mg. It is normally administered it on the evening before the commencement of their journey and possibly the next day. Treatment of nausea in adult patients could require a different dosage schedule, and the patient may be told by their physician to take 25mg at 4 to 6 hour intervals (but not to take more than 100mg per day). The above are only examples and the actual dosage that your physician calculates for you may differ. Therefore, patients must only administer the precise amount of medicine that their physician orders them to take.

Side effects

Both the 10mg and 25mg varieties of Allersoothe (Promethazine Hydrochloride) could trigger the occurrence of side effects, and a list of examples is given here:

  • Blurring of eyesight
  • Drowsy and tired feeling
  • Restless and agitated mood
  • Loose stools or difficulty defecating
  • Dizzy feeling and a lack of coordination

Although the side effects listed above are said to be more common and of a mild nature, it is still necessary to make your physician aware of all reactions which are experienced during treatment.

Patients who experience hallucinations, fever, a stiff feeling affecting the muscles, extreme sweating, a loss of ability to control the bladder or any other symptoms which are indicative of a serious reaction must attend the emergency room or consult their physician straight away.

Precautions

Allersoothe (Promethazine Hydrochloride) is known to make patients drowsy. These effects may even occur on the next day. Extra precaution and vigilance is needed in those who may perform tasks that need concentration. You must not drive or use machinery if you are affected by drowsiness or fatigue.

Dermatological photosensitivity can occur in those treated with this medicine. Wear protective clothes (such as long sleeved pants and shirts) when outdoors and use a strong UV sunscreen.
