Aricept

Aricept (Donepezil Hydrochloride) belongs to a class of drugs known as cholinesterase inhibitors. It is used as a treatment for dementia in patients affected by Alzheimer`s disease. Treatment with this drug can help to improve some functions related to the mind, including the ability to pay attention, reasoning skills, social interaction, memory function, and the ability to carry out daily tasks. This medicine works by preventing a chemical called acetylcholine from being broken down. Alzheimer`s patients generally have low levels of this chemical, which is considered to be important for mental functions.

A medical consultation is required before treatment with Aricept (Donepezil Hydrochloride) can start. Adult patients affected by mild to moderate Alzheimer`s may be prescribed a dosage ranging from 5mg to 10mg, taken once per day. Certain patients may respond better to a dosage of 10mg per day, however, the exact amount required will be decided by the physician. The prescribed dosage should never be exceeded.

Treatment with Aricept (Donepezil Hydrochloride) may cause:

• Insomnia
• Scaly skin
• A decrease in weight
• Discolored or bruised skin
• Cramps affecting the muscles

It is necessary to inform a physician if any side effects occur. There is also a possibility of severe reactions occurring, although this is considered to be less common. Immediate medical care is required if the patient experiences urination problems, seizures, fever, bloody stools, back pain or any other symptoms of a serious reaction.

If the patient has ever suffered from ulcers, gastrointestinal bleeding, asthma, heart disease or obstructive pulmonary disease, it is necessary that the prescribing physician is informed of this prior to the commencement of treatment.

This medication will only be prescribed if a physician has confirmed that the patient is suffering from Alzheimer`s disease.
