Uses

Ebast (Ebastine) is a type of non-sedating second generation antihistamine which is used for allergic disorders. Medical trials showed that it could effectively decrease symptoms of intermittent or seasonal allergic rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria by blocking histamine receptors. Upon ingestion, this medicine undergoes a pharmacological process in which it is converted to its active form carebastine. It then starts to work by means of selectively inhibiting the histamine H1 receptors, and regular dosing will help to consistently retain these effects. Resulting from this, the effects that histamine has on the nasal lining (such as inflammation) are prevented, as the histamine released from the mast cells is unable to work on its receptors.

Watery eyes and itching are also relieved. Because the histamine is unable to affect the skin and cause itching, urticaria symptoms such as hives and itchy skin are also effectively alleviated. Both in vivo and in vitro medical trials demonstrated its efficacy as an antiallergic medicine, and patients with hay fever or urticaria where shown to experience a substantial reduction in symptoms when compared to a placebo. Its effectiveness may even be comparable to second generation antihistamine medicines. Other studies showed further mechanisms of action.

It may affect the release of certain mediators of inflammation, including certain prostaglandins, and it may also block the migration of T cells and the production of cytokine (proteins which can trigger inflammation) by the T cells. This suggests that it could have potential in treating allergic inflammation or autoimmune disorders, such as atopic dermatitis and asthma, however further research is required in this area. Some experts have also recommended conducting research on its effects if used for mosquito bites, the common cold, atopic asthma and other medical disorders.
