Ribavin

Ribavin (Ribavirin) is combined with peginterferon alfa-2a to treat infections caused by the hepatitis C virus. It works by inhibiting the growth of the virus. This antiviral medicine is classified as a guanosine analog, and prominent medical experts have theorized that its antiviral action may be due to its effects on the genomes of the virus and its ability to block the viral polymerase (a type of enzyme needed for the virus to replicate).

Ribavin (Ribavirin) comes in 200mg strength capsules for oral administration. Because this medicine does not work for hepatitis C if taken alone, your physician will also instruct you to take peginterferon alfa in order for it to be effective. After an assessment and medical evaluation, the physician in charge of treatment will provide exact instructions on how to take it, as well as the frequency of administration and correct dosage. You must comply with all the instructions provided by your physician.

Treatment with the antiviral medicine Ribavin (Ribavirin) could contribute to side effects. You will need to inform the physician of this should any reactions occur. A list containing some examples is given here:

• Vertigo
• Fatigue or weakness
• Reduction in appetite
• Soreness in the muscles
• Pain occurring in the stomach

Patients will be required to immediately consult their physician if they begin to exhibit any of the symptoms of a serious reaction, including visual disturbances, fever, strange mental disturbances, irritable behavior, passing bloody stools or any other reactions not referenced in this paragraph.

Ribavin (Ribavirin) could cause anemia in some patients, and your physician may order regular blood tests to check for this.

Physicians generally tell patients not to drink alcohol, as it could lead to a deterioration of the liver condition.
