Description

Uses

Simplicef (Cefpodoxime Proxetil) is an antibiotic for dogs used to treat skin infections. It works by attaching to penicillin binding proteins which in turn disrupts the synthesis of the bacterial cell walls. This helps prevent the further spread of bacteria and allows the immune system to fight and eliminate the remaining bacteria. A substantial amount of microorganisms which would otherwise be resistant to beta lactam antibiotics can be considered susceptible to it, due to the fact that it is stable when beta lactamase enzymes are present.

In addition to this, it is also effective against many other bacteria, such as Escherichia, streptococci, staphylococci and various others. However, it does not work for infections caused by enterococci or pseudomonas spp. When administered, this medicine undergoes transformation to its active component in the gastrointestinal tract, after which it starts to work on the bacteria. Treatment helps to provide effective treatment for abscesses and wounds which have become infected.

Dosage and Administration

Simplicef (Cefpodoxime Proxetil) comes as film coated tablets, each of which is scored and contains 100mg of the main ingredient. It is usually given once per day, either with or without food. The duration of treatment can vary, and veterinarians normally recommend 5 to 7 days of treatment. In some cases, treatment may be required to continue for 2 to 3 days after the symptoms have cleared up, for a maximum period of 28 days. However, if no improvement occurs after 3 to 4 days, it is possible that the veterinarian may recommend ceasing treatment.

The exact amount of medicine required will depend on the dog`s body weight and the severity of symptoms, and veterinarians normally determine the daily dosage at a rate of 2.3mg to 4.5mg per pound of body weight. Dogs weighing 22lbs may be treated with half a tablet or else 1 whole tablet, whereas dogs weighing 44lbs may be given 1 or 2 tablets per day. Because the dosage can vary depending on individual factors, it is essential that all dog owners listen carefully to the instructions provided by the veterinarian responsible for treatment.
