Virovir (Famciclovir) treats the virus that causes shingles and genital herpes. It does not cure either condition but treats the symptoms by reducing itchiness and helping to heal any sores or blisters that have appeared. The medication operates by inhibiting the ability of the virus to reproduce to stop the spread of the infection.

The normal prescription for Virovir (Famciclovir) is one tablet taken up to three times each day for up to one week depending on the condition being treated. Some people find it easier to take the doses with food or milk as it may cause nausea in some cases.
