Description

Uses

Aziderm Cream (Azelaic Acid) is used to treat acne. It is also used to help reduce hyperpigmentation (melasma) due to its skin brightening properties. Some patients have even used it to decrease inflammation caused by rosacea. Acne causes comedones (blackheads) and spots to appear on the skin due to a number of factors, including keritinazation affecting the skin, the presence of bacteria, the production of sebum and inflammation. This medicine helps eliminate the bacteria responsible for acne (propionebacterium acnes) while also reducing inflammation and promoting skin renewal, thereby helping to relieve acne.

Many patients affected by melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and other disorders involving facial hyperpigmentation have used this cream as an alternative to other skin bleaching products. Its mechanism of action involves inhibiting the action of an enzyme known as tyrosinase, which in turn leads to a reduction in melanogenesis (the synthesis of the skin pigment melanin). This helps to promote depigmentation and normalize areas of skin which have been affected by excess pigmentation. In some cases, physicians may recommend using it alongside other dermatology products.

Dosage and Administration

Aziderm Cream (Azelaic Acid) should be applied to the area affected by acne (or hyperpigmentation if that is what is being treated). Physicians sometimes direct patients to use it 2 times daily, with one application taking place in the morning and another in the evening. However, if irritation occurs, the physician may reduce the daily dosage to 1 application per day. It is necessary to gently rub it in so as to allow the cream to fully penetrate the affected skin. In addition to this, patients may need to cleanse their skin before use with a suitable cleaning product. Ensure that you comply with all instructions given by the physician in charge of treating your dermatological disorder.

Side effects

Topical application of Aziderm Cream (Azelaic Acid) could lead to some reactions, and you must report all side effects to your physician. Possible side effects can include:

  • Tingling
  • Mild burning
  • Irritated feeling
  • Stinging sensation
  • Dryness affecting the treated area

Should you notice any serious skin reactions or other severe side effects which have not been referenced here, you will need to see your physician straight away.

Precautions

Aziderm Cream (Azelaic Acid) is for topical use only. You must not consume it by mouth, and special care should also be taken to make sure that none of the cream comes into contact with the eyes or other mucus membranes.

During treatment, it is important that you avoid exposure to the sun. If going outdoors, make sure that you apply sunscreen and protective clothing (such as caps and long sleeved shirts).

In all cases, the duration of treatment will be decided by the physician. Patients will usually be told not to use the cream for longer than 6 months.
