Description

Uses

Elina (Mizolastine) is a non sedating antihistamine exhibiting other antiallergic benefits which is effective for hay fever (seasonal allergic rhinitis) and chronic idiopathic urticaria. Other indications include perennial allergic rhinoconjunctivitis (an allergic reaction which affects the eyes as well as the nasal passages). It shares similarities with other antihistamines in relation to its mode of action, due to it acting as an antagonist of the histamine receptors and blocking the histamine from activating its receptors. This is one of the main ways in which it can neutralize allergy symptoms and episodes of allergic hives or nettle rash.

A medical study suggested potential anti-inflammatory benefits which are not due to its action on the H1 receptors. During the study, it was hypothesized that it may affect an enzyme called lipooxygenase, which could help to enhance its effects when reducing pruritis (itching) caused by urticaria. This medicine is classified as a second generation antihistamine, and the occurrence of drowsiness and sleepiness is significantly reduced when compared to other similar medicines, due to the fact that it will not enter into the brain. Its fast action and reduced drowsy formula make it a more effective choice when treating allergies and help to minimize disruption to your daily routine.

Dosage and Administration

Elina (Mizolastine) comes in special 10mg strength modified release tablets, and they are taken via the oral route. See your physician to discuss the best and safest treatment options for your allergies. In cases where treatment with this medicine is recommended, physicians will tell adult patients to take 10mg (one tablet) per day. Administer it with a sufficient quantity of water. Patients may take it alongside or after food, whichever is most convenient. However, it is very important to remember that the dosage recommended by your physician at the time of diagnosis must not be exceeded, as this could put you at risk of serious reactions.

Side effects

Oral administration of Elina (Mizolastine) for the relief of allergies (or any other condition that your physician has recommended it use) may lead to the occurrence of side effects, including:

  • Fatigue
  • Weight gain
  • Appetite changes
  • Dry sensation in the mouth
  • Digestive problems resulting in a sore stomach

When you see your physician, make sure that you report all side effects which occur. It must be noted that the side effects listed above are only some of the possible reactions that can occur. Other side effects, some of which are considerably serious can also affect patients. Make sure that you see your physician immediately if this happens.

Precautions

Elina (Mizolastine) may cause blood sugar or salt level changes in certain patients, as well as other potential reactions. Because of this, blood tests may be ordered by your physician while taking the medicine, so as to monitor your symptoms.

Even though it is a non drowsy antihistamine, this does not entirely rule out the possibility of drowsiness, and a small number of patients may still be affected.
