Uses

T-3 tablets (Liothyronine Sodium) is a synthetic version of the naturally occurring thyroid hormone. Thyroid hormone is essential for regulation of energy and metabolism in the body, and for normal cell growth. Some people are unable to produce sufficient quantities of thyroid hormone - this is called hypothyroidism. T-3 tablets (Liothyronine Sodium) are used in cases of hypothyroidism to supplement thyroid hormone production. T-3 tablets (Liothyronine Sodium) can also be prescribed to patients with goiters (an endocrine disorder characterized by an enlarged thyroid gland).

Dosage and Administration

Your doctor will prescribe you an individualized dosage of T-3 (Liothyronine Sodium). Follow their instructions exactly.

Liothyronine Sodium is usually taken early in the morning before your first meal of the day. It is taken once daily.

Side effects

Liothyronine Sodium can result in some unwanted side effects. Tell your doctor if you feel unwell due to taking this medicine or if you develop any of the following.

  • Cardiovascular effects: - Flushing, chest pain/tightness, trouble breathing with exercise, fast/irregular/pounding heartbeat, dilated veins in the neck region.
  • Central Nervous System effects: - Nausea, headache, irritability, trouble sleeping, nervousness, restlessness, confusion, dizziness, fainting, excitement.
  • Gastrointestinal effects: - Diarrhea, change in appetite, increased bowel movement, vomiting.
  • Genitourinary effects: - Change in menstrual pattern, decrease in urination
  • Musculoskeletal effects: - Swelling of the arms/legs, arm or jaw pain, muscle cramps, muscle weakness.
  • Respiratory effects: - Irregular breathing pattern, shortness of breath.
  • Hypersensitivity effects: - Rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing, fever, itching at the injection site, wheezing, edema.
  • General side effects: - Increased sweating, breathing difficulties, extreme weakness, excessive weight loss, weight gain, temporary hair loss, cold skin, extreme fatigue, leg cramps, trembling of hands, heat sensitivity, weak pulse, increased blood sugar level.
Precautions

Tell your doctor of all medicines you are taking especially Amiodarone, Amitriptyline, Carbamazepine, Colestipol, Colestyramine, Imipramine, Phenytoin, Primidone as Liothyronine Sodium can affect anticoagulants, anticonvulsants, antidiabetics, barbiturates, cardiac glycosides, estrogens, oral contraceptives, and tricyclic antidepressants.

Liothyronine Sodium is contraindicated in patients with untreated adrenal cortical deficiency or with untreated thyrotoxicosis.

There are know known issues taking Liothyronine while pregnant or breast-feeding. Check with your doctor if you are concerned.
