Tiromel

Tiromel (Liothyronine Sodium) (sometimes called T3 liothyronine) is prescribed to patients affected by hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid), when the thyroid does not produce a sufficient amount of thyroid hormone. As this hormone is important for the body`s regulation of metabolism and energy, low amounts of this hormone may cause weight gain, hair loss, cold sensitivity and other symptoms. Treatment with this medication aims to reverse these symptoms. Other uses for this medicine include treating and enlarged thyroid gland (goiter), testing for hyperthyroidism and treating Hashimoto`s thyroiditis. However, this drug is not to be used for weight loss.

Before starting treatment with Tiromel (Liothyronine Sodium) tablets, it is necessary for you to consult your physician. This medication contains 25mcg of the active ingredient. In most cases, patients undergoing treatment for hypothyroidism are told to take 25mcg, once per day. It usually takes 2 weeks before any change in symptoms is noticeable. The dosage may be increased, depending on the patient`s response to treatment. Other conditions may require different dosage regimens, and it is essential to visit your physician for a medical assessment before commencing treatment.

Possible side effects of Tiromel (Liothyronine Sodium) include:

• Anxiety
• Weight loss
• Cramps in the stomach
• A temporary loss of hair
• Perspiration and sensitivity to heat

Before starting treatment, you must inform your physician if you are currently affected by or have ever suffered from kidney disease, diabetes, any cardiovascular conditions, chest pain, arrhythmias, heart attack, an underactive pituitary gland or an underactive adrenal gland.
